SWSO Membership 2024

South West Sydney Orchestras (SWSO) is a collection of ensembles servicing the Macarthur, Liverpool and Wollondilly areas with high quality musical experiences for people of all ages.

They rehearse at Harrington Park Community Centre on Thursday from 4 - 8pm and include all instruments in the string, woodwind, brass, and percussion family.

SWSO musicians give 3 concerts a year with additional performances at community events.

We are excited to announce that Fisher's Ghost Youth Orchestra is now called South West Sydney Orchestras

FGYO was founded as a singular youth ensemble in Campbelltown in 1987 by an enthusiastic strings teacher, Pam Oxenham.  In 2013, FGYO established a junior ensemble, the current Training Orchestra, with just a handful of eager primary school students. Those students are now leading the FGYO Senior Orchestra. In 2017, the FGYO Senior Ensemble and Training Orchestra relocated to Narellan Library, to provide a more central location for all members.

Since that time, the FGYO family has grown immensely into 3 flourishing ensembles and now a new band.  With this surge in growth and a push towards establishing a clear progression pathway through the ensembles, the volunteer FGYO committee has decided to adopt a new name that better reflects the complex, thriving and inclusive identity of our organisation.

There are four ensembles under the South West Sydney Orchestras banner:

  • South West Sydney Philharmonic Strings (currently our Senior Ensemble)
  • South West Sydney Intermediate Strings (currently our Training Orchestra)
  • South West Sydney Beginner Strings (currently our Beginner Ensemble).
  • South West Sydney Youth Band (new)
  • South West Sydney Philharmonic (rehearses for an 8 week block and consists of Philharmonic String members and external musicians)

The SWSYB will consist of a Training and Concert Band and we project that Concert Band and Intermediate String members will reform the Fisher's Ghost Youth Orchestra in the not too distant future.

We have a new website address to reflect the shift towards a collective of ensembles under the SWSO banner:  https://www.swso.org.au/

We are excited about our growth and what the future holds for the South West Sydney Orchestras (SWSO).
