South West Sydney Youth Band

The South West Sydney Youth Band (SWSYB) consists of the Training and Concert Band and caters for woodwind, brass, and percussion players.

The South West Sydney Training Band (SWSTB) rehearses from 5.30pm - 6.15pm on Thursday evenings at Harrington Park Community Centre and is catered for beginners - Grade 1.

The South West Sydney Training Band (SWSCB) rehearses from 6.15pm - 7.15pm on Thursday evenings at Harrington Park Community Centre and is catered for Grade 1 players and above.

South West Sydney Concert Band members may be selected to play with the Fisher's Ghost Youth Orchestra to perform orchestral works to enrich their musical development.

Southwest Sydney Youth Band

When and where does the Sydney Southwest Youth Band rehearse?

  • The Training Band will have a 30 minute sectional tutorial and a 30 minute band rehearsal on Thursdays after school between 5 - 6.30pm at Harrington Park Community Centre. 
  • The Concert Band will be held from 6.30 - 7.30 after Training Band


Will the Southwest Sydney Youth Band give performances?

  • Southwest Sydney Youth Band will perform in the FGYO concerts as a band. In addition to this band members may also join with the Training String Orchestra and Senior Orchestra to play orchestral works to enrich their musical development.  


Who is teaching the program?

  • The program will be directed by Mr Harrison Ball, one of Australia's youngest up-and-coming commercial freelance trumpeters and educators.  Harrisson is currently lead trumpet in the Australian National Youth Jazz Orchestra for the 3rd year in a row, Salsa Kingz Band, Mucho Mambo and Sydney All-star Salsa Band.


What is the cost of tuition?

  • You can join the Southwest Sydney Youth Band in Term 2 for $125 starting Thursday 4th May 2023. 
  • Services NSW Creative Kids vouchers can be redeemed (to the value of $100) by all school aged children.
  • Discount codes can be applied at checkout during our promotion period. 


What instrument can I play?

  • You can choose any woodwind or brass instrument such as piccolo, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, french horn, trombone, or tuba. You may also choose percussion that will cover the percussion instruments used in band and orchestra. 


Do I need my own instrument and tuition book?

  • Each musician will need their own instrument.  Please contact fgyo.manager@gmail.com for information on purchasing or renting an instrument. 
  • Each musician will need to purchase a copy of the Essential Elements for Band book 1 for their instrument.


What age group is best suited for this program?

  • This program is aimed at children between the ages of 8 and 18.


What happens after the first term?

  • The musician may continue with playing in Band throughout 2023.  Registrations will open each term.

Does the musician need to attend every week?

  • This program is subsidised by fundraising undertaken by the members of the Fisher's Ghost Youth Orchestra to ensure equitable access to professional, specialised music tuition for everyone in our community. It is expected that musicians attend each week.
